What is PROMPT?

What does it stand for?

Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets

PROMPT is a specialised approach to speech therapy that focuses on the intricate connection between speech, language, and cognition.

This innovative technique utilises tactile-kinesthetic input to guide and shape a client's articulatory movements, promoting the development of accurate speech sound production and overall communication skills. By incorporating physical cues and hands-on techniques, PROMPT therapy aims to facilitate the coordination and integration of oral motor movements, leading to improved communication skills.

With its individualised and holistic approach, PROMPT therapy empowers individuals of all ages to effectively communicate and express themselves with confidence.

Is PROMPT therapy for you?

Communication is an interaction between:

  • Social-Emotional ability to connect with others

  • Cognitive-Linguistic understanding of language

  • Physical-Sensory ability to produce certain words.

If any of these areas are disordered or delayed the individual’s ability to communicate is impacted. Deirdre uses the Conceptual Framework, a unique PROMPT assessment tool, to determine each individual’s unique profile of strengths and weaknesses and to determine priorities for treatment.

An evaluation by a PROMPT Trained clinician is the only way to find out if an individual is appropriate for PROMPT therapy. PROMPT therapy is used with a wide range of children and adults who have motor speech difficulties. The most common clients have motor speech disorders, articulation problems or are non-verbal children.

Many clients with aphasia, apraxia/dyspraxia, dysarthria, pervasive developmental disorders, cerebral palsy, acquired brain injuries and autism spectrum disorders have benefitted from PROMPT therapy.

PROMPT Levels of training

Level 1 · PROMPT Trained

Therapists have completed the Introduction level of PROMPT training.

These therapists have a brief understanding of the PROMPT assessment and treatment planning and are typically focused on mastering their technique in applying PROMPTs to their clients with motor speech difficulties.

Level 2 · PROMPT Bridging Trained

Therapists have completed the second level of PROMPT training.

The second level of training increases a therapist's effectiveness through intensive assessment and treatment planning training and gives them a better understanding of how to address the Social-Emotional and Cognitive-Linguistic difficulties of their clients.

Level 3 · PROMPT Certified

Clinicians have competed a 4-month PROMPT Certification Project.

This demonstrates their complete understanding of the Approach, System and Technique and they have undertaken a high-level of mentoring from an Instructor.

Level 4 · PROMPT Instructors

Therapists have the highest level of training from the PROMPT Institute.

Most Instructors have been using PROMPT for 10+ years and are routinely required to demonstrate their excellence in PROMPT skills and knowledge.
